NEP 2020: How The National Education Policy Will Affect India’s Education Sector?

The New Education Policy 2020, aims to build a robust education system by providing quality education right from pre-school to graduation level, thereby helping in India’s transformation and progression. So in this article, we are going to see How The National Education Policy Will Affect India’s Education Sector in detail. The policy envisions to be more inclusive, holistic, comprehensive, and far-sighted to make India a knowledge hub by the end of this decade.

NEP 2020 focuses on five pillars: Affordability, Accessibility, Quality, Equity, and Accountability – to ensure continual learning. It has been crafted to the needs of the citizens as the demand for knowledge in society and the economy called for a need to acquire new skills on a regular basis.

Some highlights of NEP 2020 :

  • NEP2020 aims to recognize the need to evaluate “higher-order skills” so there is much emphasis on creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, visualization, idea generation, multidisciplinary, digital literacy, written communication, logical reasoning, and vocational exposure that prepares the next generation to thrive and compete in the new digital age.
  • Shifting the focus of assessments from academic grades to higher-order skills creates higher performance standards and the overall development of the child.
  • It also plans to use Artificial Intelligence to personalize the learning experience depending on the learner’s requirements.
  • Science, Arts, and Commerce streams are blurred as NEP 2020 emphasizes multidisciplinary learning and no separations are made between vocational and academic streams. Students get to select the subjects of their choice in academic streams.
  • Taking up vocational subjects from early grades will not only minimize the social stigma attached to taking up a vocation as a career but will also expose them to multiple career paths, including entrepreneurship.
  • NEP also allows the use of the mother tongue as the instruction medium, however, not mandating the use of a particular language on anyone.
  • The break up of fixed differences between curricular, extracurricular, and co-curricular subjects in school, and the provision of multiple entries and exit options in higher education give flexibility to students to hone their skills and interests.
  • The cluster-based approach to developing school complexes, periodic assessment of competencies, National Testing Agency for conducting universal entrance examinations, and integration of technology are measures that will go a long way in bringing about the desired improvement in the quality of school education.

Impact of NEP on educational institutes:

  1. There is going to be lesser importance on exams and more importance on learning and understanding the concepts with their practical application.
  2. This policy will focus on learning how to learn, so teachers will have to train themselves for the new outcome-based learning so they can inculcate better learning practices in students.
  3. Educational institutions will have to think about the holistic development of children along with the development of cognitive and social, ethical, and emotional capabilities.
  4. Institutions will need to adopt technology not only for educational management and planning but also to integrate it with the curriculum to keep students more engaged with the content.
  5. Teachers in coaching institutes will have to change their outlook and develop teaching strategies that will improve students’ conceptual clarity and develop cognitive abilities.
  6. Educators must be trained digitally to blend into the new outcome-based digital learning processes.
  7. Board exams will be redesigned to encourage holistic development which will eliminate the need to take private coaching which will bring back the importance of school teachers so they need to change their approach towards both learning and teaching.
  8. Colleges should march toward becoming home to Professional and Vocational training.
  9. As the new education policy aims to create large multidisciplinary institutions Colleges will have to plan in advance to serve multidisciplinary courses and should create suitable physical and technological infrastructure.
  10. The Colleges will become places for conducting intensive research and development in the faculties they operate which suggests the colleges should promote research and development right away to attract prospective students.

Thus these are the ways in which the National Education Policy will be implemented, providing quality education and creating lifelong learning opportunities for all, leading to productive employment and thereby transforming the education sector in India.
